Master of Science in Educational Leadership


The Master of Science in Educational Leadership is designed for educators who want to expand their leadership knowledge and skills to serve in informal and formal leadership roles in schools. Students who successfully complete this program will be eligible for both the WI #10 and 51 licenses. The MEL program is an accelerated cohort model and is offered in both a blended and online version. The course content emphasizes the knowledge, skills and dispositions that are compatible with the latest research reflecting on leadership in the 21st Century.

Program Format

Our MEL program is an innovative and responsive program aligned with the current Wisconsin educational changes and 21st century leadership demands. One of our goals of the program is to grow the capacity of a servant-leader mindset in our students. Our leadership coursework ties together three concepts: leading self, leading a learning organization and leading to serve.

The five-credit research strand allows each student to create a personalized learning path on any leadership or educational concept. The research strand is taught by faculty members in our doctoral program and can provide critical feedback and recommendation for entering one of our doctoral programs.

Our courses are taught by instructors or faculty members who are proven leaders in the fields of education, leadership and research.

Transfer Credits You Already Earned

A maximum of nine graduate credits may be transferred from another accredited degree-granting institution. Download our guide that explains credit acquisition .

Application Requirements

The application process requires the following:

  • Complete an admissions application, which will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • Official transcripts from each college or university attended
  • A grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (probationary acceptance may be granted)
  • If seeking administrative license #10 or #51, a valid Wisconsin teaching license is required.
  • Two letters of recommendation from a school leader
  • A personal essay
